Become a Variety Pack - The one HUGE reason to use a (great) recruitment firm

6/28/2018 Hiring Advice • Resources • Sales

Imagine this:

You’re throwing a party and want to provide snacks & drinks.

You head to the local grocery store and start walking down the aisles as you ponder the question, “What will everyone want?”

Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Your Brand?

Doritos, Fritos, Lays, Your Brand?

Jack Daniels, Ketel One, Stella, Your Brand?

So many options to choose from…what do you pick?

Now imagine that your business is one of the single brands, the different categories are types of positions, and the candidate is the host of the party.

Between #1-10 (don’t settle for 7. Pick any other number), How strongly do you think the chances are that the candidate selects your brand & position amongst all their options?

Got your answer?

Remember the number and let’s come back to this scenario in a second.

Let’s talk about the job market.

More specifically: Low Unemployment & Underemployment

Right now, the unemployment rate is 3.8% (As of May 2018). Although this is great for people, it represents a challenging (and growing) problem for employers.

Underemployment is when people take up jobs that are inadequate with respect to their training or skillset. As of last year, this number was around 12.5% for the entire labor force and as of March 2018, around 43% of recent grads and 34% or college grads were underemployed.

Why is this a problem?

We are in a situation where businesses are growing, yet they are having a tougher time finding great people to do the work. It also appears (although improving) candidates are taking jobs below their skill sets.

Simply put, people today have more options.

This means more competition for your business and if you’re not an employer of choice (brand recognized, well established, strong outreach, good online presence), you may as well be running a hiring race with heavy weights attached to your ankles.

More obvious problem: people are employed and not actively looking.

What is the solution?

Let’s go back to the party scenario.

What number did you choose?

  • If you picked 1-6, you are playing a game with the odds stacked against you.
  • If you picked 8-10, I love and respect the confidence. Although you have a leg up on the competition, you’re still fighting for the same talent in a small pond.

Solution:

drum roll please.

A recruitment firm that specializes in your industry and position in need.

Why?

  • In a world full of brands, we are the go to Variety Pack. Recruitment firms represent many brands and therefore attract a much broader (and larger) talent pool than a single brand alone would be capable of drawing in.
  • Candidates tend to be more receptive to us. Most candidates understand that agency recruiters have access to numerous opportunities, can assist them with questions they have, represent them like an agent, and most importantly, can help them get interview opportunities they otherwise would not be able to get themselves.
  • We are true HUNTERS. I mean, they don’t call us headhunters for nothing. Employed people typically don’t post their resumes or apply to positions. They require much more effort to find, attract, and convincing to make a change.
  • We are educators and sales people. A position with your company is just like any product or service. It needs to be sold. If you don’t have good marketing and sales people, you don’t have customers. A good recruitment firm is really an extension of both these departments. It’s not just about finding & attracting the right people, its making sure you win them over to the opportunity.
  • Hire the RIGHT talent that will stick. A good specialized recruiter becomes an in-house consultant. They (should) understand your industry and position extremely well. Acting as a true partner, a recruiter will help you identify what makes a candidate the “right” candidate (it’s not always about finding the best candidate), make sure your hiring process is streamlined for success, and if needed, offer advice on the position and compensation plan to ensure that it is competitive. If done properly, you will hire someone that is not just a great for the position, but also more likely to stick around and build a career.
  • Using recruiters can actually save you money. Recruiting requires knowledge, time, resources, and energy. K+T+R+E = $$$$. The cost for recruitment resources (job postings, marketing, etc), plus the value of your time and efforts could VERY easily end up costing more than going with a professional recruitment firm. What’s worse, you could also spend all this money, time, and energy in a failed effort resulting in not getting the hire you want.

Getting recruiting right is crucial to the growth of any business. Hiring the right person is a multi-year investment that keeps on giving, while hiring the wrong person can take your business 2 steps backwards.

Recruiting is a skill and like any skill, it takes practice to become great at it. If you haven’t recruited before, I wouldn’t recommend starting by diving head first into it for your business.

Start by seeking out recruiters to pick their brain.

Ask questions.

Get advice.

Most recruiters (at least all of us at Premiere Onboard) will be happy to answer any questions you have. After learning a little more from the experts, if you feel like giving it a try yourself, more power to you!

Either way, we're here to help you.

Just remember:

In a world full of brands, turn your business into a variety pack by partnering with a great specialty recruitment firm.
